Parts List
Every trade has its own small vocabulary. These are the shop words that appear in the two jobs, so nobody has to guess what we meant.
- Install order
- The sheet written before any work on a car begins: which car, which part, the steps in sequence and the checks at the end.
- Clipboard
- Where the install order hangs, usually from a side mirror, so the person working can read the next step without walking away.
- Tick
- The mark in the margin when a step is finished. A step is ticked when it is done, never when it is about to be done.
- Special line
- The space on an install order for whatever this job needs that the last one did not. On the door card, it is the one thing that is different today.
- Outline board
- A tool wall with a painted shape behind each tool, so a missing tool shows up as an empty shape from across the room.
- Line of sight
- What the driver sees through the windshield without moving the head. Nothing we fit is allowed to sit in it.
- Trim panel
- The plastic covers along the dash and doors. Cables run behind them so they never swing loose in view.
- Holder
- A mount for a phone or a screen, set low and fixed in place before the car moves.
- Final check
- The walk around the car by a second person, who reads the ticks on the sheet rather than asking the installer what they remember.
If a word in the notebook is missing from this list, write to us and we will add it.
